The Tisch Office of Career Development strives to provide students and alumni with lifelong professional skills that help establish and sustain successful careers in the arts. Through lectures, interviews, academic papers, performances, and demonstrations, Recorded Music faculty and invited guests delve into topics that complement the knowledge and information presented in our classrooms and studios. ![]() In addition to coursework, an essential component of a student's educational experience at Recorded Music consists of a robust offering of career-focused special events and programming. The Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music is not only proud of its distinguished list of faculty members, but has access to many of the music industry's leading entrepreneurs, artists, and producers. Past projects have included launching a record label, creating a production company, developing a new media company, and starting an innovative music venue. The final year culminates with a capstone project in which students develop a full creative plan to launch themselves as entrepreneurs. Internships have been held with established record companies like Universal or Sony Records, independent production companies such as Epitaph Records, trade publications like Rolling Stone or Impact, broadcast companies like MTV, and music recording associations, including the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.Īdvanced students in Recorded Music may pursue advanced-level study in business, production, history and criticism, or musicianship and performance through courses in the department and courses at other NYU schools. Internships offer the ability to apply theory from the classroom to the functions of work within the field, as well as assist in building skills, confidence, and relationships with industry professionals. They then work to develop their own personal, idiosyncratic style through in-class training and professional guidance.Īll Recorded Music students must complete an industry internship, which provides hands-on experience vital to their educational and career goals. In our musicianship and performance area, students focus on the craft of songwriting, theory and ear training, and performance technique. Concurrently, students also explore critical writing and music journalism, delving into the cultural impact of recorded music and the history of contemporary musical genres such as rock, R&B, hip-hop, and pop, world and electronica. Students take courses on business and legal issues as they relate to the specialized needs of the contemporary music industry, in conjunction with a series of practicums in the recording studio, where students are expected to become proficient in a range of recorded music practices. There are four main areas of curricular study: business, production, history and criticism, and musicianship and performance.
